Bennerley Fields School provides day education for pupils between 2 and 16 years old. Pupils can have moderate and severe learning difficulties. Needs met include: Autism, speech and language difficulties, visual and/or hearing impairment and associated behavioural difficulties.
The pupils aged 2-5 years are in the Diagnostic and Assessment Nursery, which caters for a wide range of provision, specialising in communication The school provides the full national curriculum including the foundation stage and has received a School Achievement Award for achieving high standards. The school has the Basic Skills Quality Mark Award which acknowledges the good core curriculum and many other nationally recognised awards.

The aims are based on the following principles: • Pupils learn most effectively when they feel secure and are valued: • The following are high priority areas for the pupils. - Communication - Social skills - Independence and Life Skills - Literacy - Mathematics - ICT • All pupils should have access to a high quality curriculum differentiated to meet individual needs. • Many pupils will have their own personal priority needs eg physiotherapy, speech and language therapy, which are central to their learning and quality of life. • Provision for therapeutic needs is an essential element of the curriculum for many pupils and is integrated within it. • High expectations of both pupils and staff are essential to learning. • Learning happens both inside the class and outside, playtimes, out of and after school opportunities are given importance. • There should be increased opportunities to interact with and contribute to the wider community and prepare pupils for adult life. • There should be increasing collaboration between special school, mainstream and FE. • Parents and pupils should take an active part in decisions and processes linked to education.
